Understanding The Components Of The Toefl Exam
The TOEFL text has four major components; reading, listening, speaking and writing. See details of the TOEFL components below;
The TOEFL Reading Component
The reading component is the first section of the TOEFL exam. It includes three-four academic passages taking from various aspects of the human endeavor. Usually, you have 60-80 minutes to read these passages and answer between 35-56 questions in total. You are expected to read, understand and efficiently answer questions under them. Interestingly, the answers are to be gotten from the reading passages.
Kindly Note: The reading texts come from academic sources and vary in subject matter. However, no particular subject knowledge is needed as all necessary information is included in the text.
The TOEFL Listening Component
The listening section of the TOEFL exam comes immediately after the reading section. The listening test, consists of 4-6 classroom conversations and academic lectures. Here, you will have 60-92 minutes to answer a total of 34-51 questions after listening the academic lecture or conversation.
Kindly note, you will listen to the audio once, it will not be replay, you will not have control over the audio and you are to answer question after listening to the conversion. There will be a mandatory 10 minutes break after the listen section.
The TOEFL Speaking Component
Immediately after the ten minutes break is the commencement of the speaking test. Here, you will have to speak into the microphone of the headset a response to the prompts. The speaking test is programmed for 20 minutes and you will have to answer four tasks. Some of the tasks will include expressing your ideas and opinions about a familiar topic which others will be to summarize lectures.
The speaking test is automated which means you will be given a headset and microphone. Your answers will be recorded and sent to an examiner for assessment. Kindly Note: During the speaking test, ensure the microphone of your headset is well positioned so that it can record your response. This is because the TOEFL app is to record your answer which the examiners will use later to grade your speaking score.
The TOEFL Writing Component
The toefl writing test component is the last part of the four hours test, you will have 50 minutes for the toefl writing test to respond to two tasks; Integrated writing task and independent writing task.
- The first task will be for 20 minutes. You will write an essay in response to a reading or listening text – this is integrated writing task
- The second task will take 30 minutes. You will write an essay in which you will be required to support an opinion. This is independent writing task
